«‘Tax the rich’ comes the familiar cry from the left – but what happens when the rich leave? As Michael Simmons observes in this week’s cover piece, Britain is becoming an increasingly inhospitable place for the wealthy and, unsurprisingly, many are voting with their feet. Since 2016, more than 30,000 millionaires have left the UK – an exodus unmatched in the developed world. It’s not easy to muster sympathy for the ultra-rich. But the uncomfortable truth is that Britain depends on them: the top 1 per cent of earners contribute nearly 30 per cent of all income tax. The Treasury thought it could squeeze the rich without consequence. It was wrong. Unless that mistake is acknowledged soon, it won’t just be the wealthy who pay the price; it will be all of us.»
Olhe que não Dr.ª Mortágua, não alivia, carrega. Se espremer demasiado os "ricos" eles emigram e serão os "pobres" a pagar mais impostos para manter o Estado sucial.
