From the notes pushed through letterboxes from neighbours offering help, to the doctors and nurses returning to the NHS, there have been plenty of examples of how good people can be to one another in a crisis like this. Today we were given a stunning statistic that was unusually cheering against the rising death toll: 405,000 people have signed up as volunteers to help the health service during this outbreak. They will deliver food and medicines, take patients to appointments and check in by phone on those who are in isolation.

Boris Johnson announced the figure at the daily Downing Street press conference. The call for volunteers was just 24 hours ago, and the target was to recruit 250,000 helpers. It currently only applies to England, but there are hopes to replicate it in Wales too. Johnson said the helpers would be 'absolutely crucial in the fight against this virus'.»
