«Nicolás Maduro is due to outline a new plan to eliminate the speculation, hoarding and contraband he sees as part of a plot to overthrow his government. He is also promising to find a way to reconcile socialism with productivity. Mr Maduro has threatened to “build a new jail” to house those engaged in what he claims is an “economic war” on the part of the country’s “bigwigs”. With a crucial parliamentary election due before the end of the year, only around 20% of voters approve of his performance. A deep recession could shrink the country’s GDP by 6-7%, while inflation could reach 140% or more. As he battles for political survival, there are fears that even the country’s biggest firm, Empresas Polar, a food giant, may not be immune from seizure
