«Lloyds’ boss António Horta-Osório really likes to win. So much so that on Wednesday he cancelled a day out at Wimbledon to go to the Euromoney awards at the Tower of London. He picked up a gong for being the world leader in “Adapting to the Regulatory Environment”. Horta-Osório was also missing the football — his native Portugal was pitched against surprise semi-finalists Wales. But the banker clearly kept abreast. Taking the stage to accept his award, he gloated: “Portugal is leading 2-0 and [there’s] one minute to go, so I’m going to make my bet.” He then launched into a worthy speech about the UK banking system being “stronger than ever”. But he forgot his host was Rob Brydon, the Welsh comedian. And Brydon had the last laugh. “Viewers will be pleased to hear that Antonio’s speech is now available as a talking book,” he quipped, as the deflated banker left the podium.»
